I had to choose a user-name for the Civ Fanatics forums when I joined. I was originally looking for some strong military leader name to fit in with the names used by the GOTM crowd. All of the good ones seemed to be already taken though, so I decided to pick something related to my real name. Dianthus seemed to fit with my surname pretty well. The dictionary definition is :
A plant of the genus Dianthus, which includes carnations and pinks.
I recently discovered that there was a ship named HMS Dianthus:
